About Neptune

Neptune is the eighth and most distant planet in our solar system, orbiting the Sun at an average distance of 4.5 billion kilometers. It was the first planet located through mathematical prediction rather than direct observation, discovered in 1846 when astronomers John Couch Adams and Urbain Le Verrier independently calculated the position of an unknown planet based on gravitational perturbations observed in Uranus's orbit.

As an ice giant, Neptune has a composition similar to Uranus, with a thick atmosphere of hydrogen, helium, and methane overlying a mantle of water, ammonia, and methane ices surrounding a rocky core. The methane in its upper atmosphere absorbs red light and gives Neptune its striking deep blue color, more vivid than Uranus due to an as-yet-unidentified component that enhances the blue tint.

Despite receiving very little solar energy due to its extreme distance from the Sun, Neptune has the most violent weather in the solar system. Wind speeds can exceed 2,100 km/h, making them the fastest recorded on any planet. The planet generates more than twice the energy it receives from the Sun, driven by internal heat from its slow gravitational contraction and possibly radiogenic heating.

The only spacecraft to visit Neptune, flying within 4,951 km of the cloud tops. Discovered 6 new moons, the planet's ring system, the Great Dark Spot, and Triton's active geysers.
Hubble Space Telescope (1990s-present)
Monitored Neptune's atmosphere from Earth orbit, tracking the disappearance of the Great Dark Spot and emergence of new storm systems.
James Webb Space Telescope (2022)
Captured the clearest view of Neptune's rings in over 30 years using near-infrared imaging, also revealing atmospheric features and seven of its moons.
Neptune Odyssey (proposed)

Neptune's moon Triton is slowly spiraling inward toward the planet. In about 3.6 billion years, it will cross Neptune's Roche limit and be torn apart by tidal forces, potentially forming a spectacular ring system that could rival or surpass Saturn's rings. Triton is also one of the few moons in the solar system known to be geologically active, with cryovolcanic geysers of nitrogen gas.
