Formation & Overview

Our Solar System formed approximately 4.6 billion years ago from the gravitational collapse of a giant interstellar molecular cloud known as the solar nebula. As the cloud contracted, it began to spin and flatten into a rotating disk. Most of the mass concentrated at the center, igniting nuclear fusion and giving birth to the Sun.

The remaining material in the disk gradually coalesced into planetesimals, then protoplanets, and eventually the eight planets we know today. Closer to the Sun, where temperatures were high, only rocky materials could condense — forming the terrestrial planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. Farther out, beyond the "frost line," volatile compounds like water, ammonia, and methane could freeze into solid ices, contributing to the formation of the gas and ice giants: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

The Solar System spans roughly 287 billion kilometers (about 1,920 AU) to the edge of the Oort Cloud. It sits about 26,000 light-years from the center of the Milky Way galaxy, orbiting at approximately 828,000 km/h — taking about 225–250 million years to complete one galactic orbit, a period sometimes called a "cosmic year."

Galileo's Telescope

Discovery of Uranus
William Herschel discovered Uranus, the first planet found using a telescope and the first to be discovered in modern history, expanding the known Solar System's boundary.

Neptune Found by Math
Neptune was discovered by Johann Galle based on mathematical predictions by Urbain Le Verrier and John Couch Adams, who calculated its position from gravitational perturbations of Uranus.

Sputnik — The Space Age Begins
The Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite to orbit Earth, marking the dawn of the Space Age and igniting the Space Race with the United States.

Apollo 11 Moon Landing
Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the Moon, while Michael Collins orbited above. "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

Voyager 1 & 2 Launch
NASA launched both Voyager probes on a grand tour of the outer planets. Voyager 1 is now the most distant human-made object, over 24 billion km from Earth, and has entered interstellar space.

Hubble Space Telescope
Deployed from Space Shuttle Discovery, Hubble has provided some of the most detailed visible-light images of distant galaxies and played a key role in discovering the accelerating expansion of the universe.
1997–2017
Cassini–Huygens at Saturn
The Cassini orbiter spent 13 years studying Saturn, its rings, and moons. The Huygens probe landed on Titan in 2005 — the most distant landing ever achieved — revealing lakes of liquid methane.
2015
New Horizons at Pluto
After a 9.5-year journey spanning 5 billion km, NASA's New Horizons performed the first flyby of Pluto, revealing a geologically active world with nitrogen ice glaciers, mountains, and a heart-shaped plain.
2021–present
James Webb Space Telescope
Launched on December 25, 2021, JWST is the most powerful space telescope ever built. From its position at the L2 Lagrange point, it observes the universe in infrared, studying exoplanet atmospheres, the earliest galaxies, and star-forming regions in unprecedented detail.
